Summary: Anakin, newly-arrived at the Temple, misses home.
Author's Notes: Um... nothing comes to mind. Go figure!
Anakin ran his fingers over the braid that brushed his right shoulder. His new Padawan braid: a symbol of his dedication to the Jedi Order and apprenticeship to his master. He was still getting used to it. The braid itself was bumpy and tight -- tighter than his mother’s wide braids. The end of it looked and felt like a paintbrush. If he were back home, he knew Kitster would try to use it as a paintbrush as well, which would probably result in a friendly scuffle.
He fingered the coarse bristles, thinking of his friend. Anakin didn’t have any friends here yet, and he was sure he never would. His peers stared at him scathingly when no master was looking, even though he hadn’t done anything deserving of their scorn. When he’d told Master Obi-Wan that everyone hated him, Obi-Wan had replied that Jedi don’t hate.
Had he really seen Kitster a mere week ago? It felt like longer ago than that. And he knew it would be much longer still until he saw him again. If he saw him again.
Anakin swallowed a sudden lump in his throat. He wasn’t a baby. He wouldn’t cry. “Don’t look back,” his mother had said. He squeezed the braid as hard as he could until the threat of tears passed.
